Hearing, Vision and Scoliosis Testing
The school nurse routinely conducts screening tests on hearing, vision
and scoliosis as recommended by the state department of health. Detecting
and addressing health and development problems early helps in
maintaining the best learning potential for each child.
Hearing screenings grades: Pre, K, 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 10, 12
Vision screenings grades: Pre, K, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11
Scoliosis screenings grades: 5-8 girls; 6-8 boys
Health screenings may also be done by request of parent, teacher
or doctor. Referral and follow up are done on students who deviate
from the
normal limits as established by the Kansas State Department
of Health and Environment.
Immunization Management
Monitoring students and staff regarding their immunization status
is important in the control of diseases. All students are required
to be up-to-date
on their immunizations in order to attend school. A yearly
audit is conducted and U.S.D. #417 is compliant and enforces the state
immunization
law. A yearly clinic is offered to the staff to keep them
current on their immunizations.
Communicable Disease Control
Identification, treatment and control measures are necessary
in dealing with communicable diseases. Student and staff will be
excluded from
school until a proper treatment plan is started and carried
out according to local and state rulings.
Health Education
The school nurse may assist the classroom teacher in presenting
health related subjects. She also is available for individual and
family health
consultation. It is our goal to encourage preventive health
measures and promote wellness activities. The nurse is also responsible
for instructing
school employees on bloodborne pathogens.
Health Assessment
Nursing assessments involving growth, health and development
are routinely done. Monitoring of height and weight is done on each
child, with
blood pressure checks on middle and high school students.
Care plans are written for children with special health needs.
