A Science Fair for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students of Prairie
Heights Middle School will be held Thursday, March 17, 2005 from 7:00-8:00
PM
in the gymnasium of the school.
Each student will be required to prepare an exhibit for the Fair, 5th
grade students will be required to write a paper on an approved subject dealing
with the science curriculum. Their
papers will be displayed during the Science Fair with a ribbon being awarded
for their achievement.
Students will work independently on a project. All work on exhibits must be done by
the individual student. Teachers,
parents, or sponsors may advise, but not build the project. Students should acknowledge the
contributions of others if appropriate.
The projects may be either biological or physical science projects
of these three types:
(1) Demonstrations - Using equipment
(2) Experiments - with records or charts to show results
(3) Collections - displayed with
identification and explanatory
information
Each project should include a tri-fold poster with information
explaining the exhibit.
Medals for 1st, 2nd , and 3rd place winners, will be awarded in each grade, an overall
winner will also be picked. The
overall winner will be chosen from the 6th - 8th grade displays only. All other participants will receive
ribbons for their projects.
Exhibits will be displayed on tables provided. Construction of exhibits must be
durable and all moving parts firmly attached and safe. Exhibits cannot be attached by nails,
bolts, screws, etc. to the tables.
Masking tape may be used.
Live animals, dangerous chemicals, open flames and explosives must
not be exhibited. If your
experiment requires electricity, make sure you have all necessary switches,
cords, extension cords and multiple plug outlets needed. There will not be any provided.
A card identifying the individual will be placed on the exhibit.

Choose a project to
work on. Make sure you have enough
time to complete the project before the due date. Projects requiring plants should be started immediately
because of the gestation period of many seeds to sprout and grow, or they may
be purchased from a vendor if your project requires a mature plant.
Turn in the subject
of your project on the slip provided at the bottom of this page by January
31, 2005. This applies only to
6th -8th grade students. The 5th grade students need to choose something to
work on by February 16th.
Fifth grade students
may use the internet, books, periodicals, or other written material to support
their research. If parts of an
article are used in the paper a bibliography must be provided giving credit to
the author of the article. List
the articles, the author, and the
date published if applicable. If
it is from the internet or from an encyclopedia list the type of book and
volume, ot the web site.

Judges will interview students, then based on the interview and
the display each project
will be judged. Scoring of
the projects will be based on the following;
Originality
or creativity, Project
thoroughness & learning experience,
Workmanship, Effectiveness of display, and
Difficulty of project.
Exhibits are to be removed and taken home after 8:00 p.m. If it is impossible to take material
home at that time, please make arrangements for another student to take the
project down or store it until it can be taken home.
