Research Paper Guidelines

Step 1- Definition of the Problem

There are all types of biological topics in our world today. The opening statement of your paper should explain exactly what the problem is and how it affects living organisms today. Information on how your knowledge on this topic  will benefit others around you or how this will affect you in the future allows the reader to see what the influence of your knowledge should be.

Step 2-  This is also called the history of your topic. When did this type of research start coming forward, and what are the major areas of thought on this topic as of the present day. Show research and statistics on how this problem affects living organisms within our environment. This may be in the form of charts, graphs and quotations from research information. This should also provide knowledge about your topic so that others may have a better idea on how to solve the problem or what you will be doing in the solution to your topic

Step 3- Develop a strategy which attempts to solve the problem. This must be well thought out and you must look at every angle which may cause problems during the implementation of the project. For example if you are working with hamsters, what happens if you have one die, what will you do then or how will you handle it. You should also show reason as to why the steps of your project will help provide a solution to the problem, or draw insight to the major parts of the project so the reader will know what to be looking for in your procedure. For those of you who are doing a controlled experiment, here is where you will explain you control and experimental groups, as well as your dependent and independent variables.

Step 4- The procedure portion of the project will briefly explain the steps in your project in a fashion which presents the overall objective  of your project. The exact details of the steps in your project will be created later in  the project paper showing how to do the experiment. On the research paper, you should give an in depth description on how to do the project by telling how to set the experiment or project up, what the dependent and independent variables are and what results you will be measuring and how you will be measuring it. You also need to explain how you will measure your experiment or project and by what method you will collect your data or measurements on .

Step 5- Conclusion. During this portion of the paper you should attempt to make projections on what you feel the outcome may be.  Understand that you are only using your research to draw this conclusion, you will have no data to look at when you are writing this paper. This conclusion is taken from the knowledge you have gained. This will be much similar to a hypothesis. Once again charts, graphs and other materials used in earlier portions of the paper may be used as references to illustrate points which may provide substantiation on solving the problem.

Due Dates

October 5th- A rough draft with footnotes should be handed in. Bibliography ( works cited) which has a minimum of three.

October 26- Title page and final copy of research paper is due with works cited.
