Chp.
1 Biological Principles- Contains
information on the Scientific Process and characteristics of living organisms.
Chp.
2 Nature of Cells- This chapter
discusses the history of how the cell was discovered and the formulation
of the cell theory. We will also take a look at Proteins, Carbohydrates,
Lipids and Nucleic Acids as to their importance in life. By understanding
the types of organelles in cells we will better be able to understand the
function of cells.
Chp.
19 Overview of Diversity- In this
chapter we will only cover the classification of living organisms, which
also brings about a review of Endosymbiosis and the evolution of
organisms.
Chp. 20 Viruses and Bacteria
- This unit may be the most important
unit we cover during the year in General Biology. As long as we live
on this planet, we will be affected by germs. Bacteria, and viral components
are two of the major sources of germs we will be faced with. It is of great
importance that we understand the basic composition of these germs, diseases
that they cause which will affect us and how to attempt to prevent their
spreading throughout our body.
Viral
History- Historical identification of viruses and their basic
component structure.
HIV-AIDS-
One of the most devastating diseases of the 20th Century
Bacteria-
The understanding of bacterial structure and the diseases they most commonly
cause.
Chp.
21 Protist- This chapter is about
organisms which belong to the "Catch all Kingdom" called Protista. The
organisms in this kingdom lack characteristics which allow them to belong
to the Plant, Fungi or Animal kingdoms. There is a great amount of diversity
in organisms in this group. We find everything from unicellular heterotrophs
and autotrophs to multicellular algae which look and operate much like
plants. We also find many protist organism which cause disease in this
kingdom.
