Course Outline


English I is a required class to be taken during the freshmen year.

Texts: Prentice Hall Literature, Gold edition c. 2005 and Writing and Grammar, PH c. 2005

                                    Numerous practice and review handouts

Required Materials:     a 3 ring binder

                                    Pencils

                                    Blue or black pen

                                    Paper, loose leaf paper or a notebook is fine

                                   

Course Outline:

Literature/Reading/Vocabulary

Using literature as the format, the student will learn reading and study skills and study vocabulary strategies.

  1. Fictional Prose:  The student will read, discuss and respond to short stories and novels to learn the elements used in the fiction genre.
  2. Drama:  The student will read, discuss and respond to dramatic selections to learn the elements used in drama.
  3. Nonfiction:  The student will read, discuss and respond to various selections of biography, autobiography, essays, personal writings and technical writings to learn the elements used in nonfiction prose.
  4. The Epic:  The student will read, discuss, listen to and respond to selections from epic literature.
  5. Poetry:  The student will read, discuss and respond to various selections of poetry to learn the elements and terms used in poetry.

Writing/Grammar

The student will write to understand the writing process (especially the six trait writing model), review the basic elements of writing (sentences, paragraphs and essays), review basic grammar conventions, and practice various forms of writing (personal writing, subject writing, descriptive writing, narrative writing, expository writing, persuasive writing, technical writing and writing about literature).
