Reading Incentives

Compiled by Rochelle Sheddrick

Try transferring books into "miles", use a map and follow their progress
across the United States. See if they can visit each state on the map.

This year we also wanted to do something different...instead of a "ME"
incentive we wanted a "Them" incentive for reading. So we heard about
Barbara Saltzmann and the "The Jester with out his Jingle" program to
have students read a penny a page to get money to buy ill or terminally
ill kids a jester and book. These two things have helped students go
through the medical procedures they have to to get better.
Check out the web site.... or call them at 1-800-9-jester
Hope this inspires students to read even more for others....

Our principals dyed their hair when the students reached,I think, 20,000 AR points. So you might involve your principals in some way--past things done to a former principal when 4th. graders reached a goal, he had to dress like a leprechaun (St. Patrick's day), hula dancer...you get the picture.

Our K-6 P.E. teacher is doing a Lewis & Clark Fitness Challenge with students this year. She is teaming with our school counselor and me and using Lewis & Clark as a year-long theme that we will tie into library skills and other curricular areas. Students’ exercise will earn them “miles” to help them progress along the Lewis & Clark trail.
