Classical

Style of the second of three phases of ancient Greek art (480-323 B.C.). The rigid poses of Egyptian and early Greek figures gave way to a greater interest in anatomy and more relaxed poses.

Charioteer (470 BC?) is an example of the early classical Greek style, made of bronze and having more life to it than Archaic sculpture. This is a detail of a complete figure, originally part of a group that included a chariot and horses. The figure represents a king's driver. The eyes are made of glass paste with lashes made of hairlike pieces of bronze.
