Neoclassicism

New classicism. A revival of classical Greek and Roman forms in art, music, and literature, particularly during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Europe and America. It was part of a reaction to the excesses of Baroque and Rococo art.
The Oath of Horatii (1784-1785, Louvre, Paris) by French artist Jacques-Louis David was one of a number of paintings commissioned by Louis XVI that were intended to be used to improve public morality through art. The scene shows the three Horatii brothers vowing to sacrifice their lives for their country and is clearly influenced by classical Roman art.
