Course Descriptions

ENGLISH III
Length of Course: year Grade Level: 11 Pre-Requisites: English II
Course Description: This course focuses on writing skills, literature, listening and speaking. This includes the development and writing of paragraphs and essays in various forms, technical writing, and a research paper. Students read a variety of American literature for comprehension and to draw conclusions, and at least one major American novel, and will read research. Students are also expected to listen and participate in discussions and to make various presentations.


AMERICAN STUDIES
Length of Course: year Grade Level: 11 Pre-Requisites: English II
Course Description: American Studies is a two-hour block course that integrates English III with American History and is team-taught by two instructors, one from English and one from Social Science. The course covers American literature and American writers. The course includes study of grammar and composition as well, including an annotated research paper. The material covered is generally the same as is covered in English III and American History.


ENGLISH COMPOSITION I (concurrent credit)
Length of Course: semester
Grade Level: 12
Pre-Requisites: grade of "C" or higher in English III + pass BCCC test
Course Description : Involves a study of the grammatical and rhetorical structure as applied to effective writing. Regular writing assignments are an integral part of the course. The primary objective of this course is to provide learning and writing experiences which will allow students to improve their knowledge, skills, and understanding of writing and reading. Satisfactory completion of this course will earn the student high school credit plus three hours of college credit through Butler County Community College.

INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE (concurrent credit)

Course Description : This is an introductory course to the study of literary terminology and criticism in poetry, fiction, and drama. The objective of this course is to develop an understanding and appreciation of literature through discussion and compositions. Satisfactory completion of this course will earn the student high school credit plus three hours of college credit through Butler County Community College.
