Grammar Instruction

Grades K-4:
•Teachers will model the correct grammar and usage.
•Teachers will call parts of speech and sentences by the correct name.
•Teachers will teach those concepts necessary for correct writing and speaking using the students; writing as a basis for the instruction.

Grades 5-6:
Teachers will continue the modeling of correct grammar and usage.
Students will be held accountable for knowing:
• nouns
• verbs
• adjectives
• adverbs
• subjects
• predicates

Grades 7-8:
Teachers will continue the modeling of correct grammar and usage.
Students will continue to review and maintain knowledge of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, subjects, and predicates.

Students will be held accountable for knowing:
• conjunctions
• pronouns
• interjections
• prepositions
• direct objects
• predicate complements
• indirect objects
• prepositional phrases
• compound sentences

Grade 9:
Teachers will continue the modeling of correct grammar and usage.
Students will continue to review and maintain knowledge of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, pronouns, interjections, prepositions, subjects, predicates, direct objects, predicate complements, indirect objects, prepositional phrases, and compound sentences.

Students will be held accountable for knowing:
• appositive phrases
• gerund phrases
• participle phrases
• infinitive phrases
• complex sentences

Grades 10-12:
Grammar will be addressed in formal lessons as needed.
Students will be held accountable for using standard American grammar in all speaking and writing.

Handwriting Instruction

Manuscript handwriting instruction:
•Kindergarten
•Grade 1
•Grade 2, first semester

Cursive handwriting instruction:
•Grade 2, second semester - introduce cursive strokes and formation of lower case letters
•Grade 3 - emphasizes cursive with instruction for formation of uppercase letters and review of lowercase letters. Students will practice reading and writing words in cursive.
•Grades 4 - instruct and review the reading and writing of cursive handwriting
•Grades 5 - maintain the use and reading of cursive handwriting

Spelling Instruction

Spelling instruction will be integrated into all curriculum areas. The student will:
•spell high frequency words correctly in original writing.
•use temporary spelling when needed on rough drafts to enrich vocabulary.
•recognize and correct misspellings on final copy work. USD 417

Keyboarding Instruction

The committee recommends to the district in the area of technology:
•keyboarding to be introduced in the third grade.
•keyboarding to be emphasized in the fourth grade.
•keyboarding to be reinforced in grades 5-12.
