The use of concept mapping techniques allows the student to create meaning through the connection of one idea to another. Connections can be made between information students already know to new information that they are receiving. Connections can also be made between content areas, thus providing students with "hooks" to hang new knowledge on. The integration of ideas facilitates retention of material.
