OSKALOOSA HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARS' BOWL LETTERING POLICY

Knowledge Bowl team membership is open to all students in grades 9-12. The varsity team consists of six to eight students, chosen early in the season. Varsity team members are usually upperclassmen with experience, but freshmen and sophomores are not excluded. Returning letterwinners will be given preference because of their proven commitment to the team.

The junior varsity is made up of all other members of Knowledge Bowl (the varsity alternates are also part of the junior varsity) . I try to alternate team members so that everyone attends at least two meets. Students compete for a position on the team for the JV League Meet in January. We sponsor two JV meets a year, and, if enough students are available, I will have two teams in one of those meets. A JV player may attend a varsity meet if we are shorthanded, but this has never happened. The JV had six meets this year.

Lettering in Knowledge Bowl requires the following:

Be a member of the Varsity team.

Attend 75% of practices. (I don't usually set up a practice unless most of the varsity can be there. We have many activities vying for the same practice time.)

Attend 75% of possible varsity meets.

Participate in at least one Knowledge Master Open.

Help with one of the JV meets as Moderator, Scorer, Timer or Judge. (This requirement may be waived for those involved in sports.)

Note: I do not keep track of questions answered at meets because I want my team to work together. They are competing as a team, not against each other. This may hurt us at competitions like High-Q, but so far we've done okay this way. I also do not try to keep a point system for lettering because I'm just not number oriented.
