Council Grove Middle School 6th Grader will go on their Rock Hounding Expedition on May 14.

 

Itinerary

8:10-Leave school

8:30-9:15-Reservoir-geode hunt

9:15-Leave for Fossil Bed

9:30-11:30 ­ Fossil bed-fossil hunt

11:30-Leave for Mr. Frye's house

11:30-12:30 Lunch at Mr. Frye's

12:30-2:30-Rock hounding

2:30 Return to school

 

Clothing

Dress comfortably in old clothes.

Dress in layers--long pants before lunch and maybe shorts after lunch (depending on weather)

LONG PANTS AND HARD SOLED SHOES MUST BE WORD AT RESERVOIR AND FOSSIL BEDS!

Sturdy shoes or boots are best for the MORNING. Sneakers work best at the creek bed. Your feet will probably get wet

Equipment and things to bring

Lunch-those who wish will be able to cook hot dogs

Water bottle

Back pack, tackle box, or plastic tool box to carry tools and samples

Medicine bottles or other containers to store small samples

Digging device -(small shovel, garden tool, large spoon, etc.)

Large size sieve (sandbox toy) to sift out small rocks, etc

Magnifying glass -(not necessary)

Small hammer -(must have eye protection on to use hammer)

Eye protection -(necessary if you use hammer to break rock open)

Pliers or vice grips

Small brush -(toothbrush, etc)

Scraper -(possibly small putty knife) to clean sample

Small notebook and pen or pencil to take field notes

Four tent pegs and 20 feet of yarn (if you can bring some) to mark your area at the gravel bar
