Lab Write-ups

The following is an outline for a basic lab write-up. This is required for all labs conducted in class except those which you are informed of ahead of time. Each write-up should include all of the parts indicated below unless informed otherwise. Failure to include all parts will result in deduction of points from the lab. Your participation in the lab will also be given consideration in the grade.

1. Title -- The title for each lab will be given either in the textbook or by the instructor.
2. Purpose -- The purpose of the lab will also be given either in the textbook or by the instructor. It states the reason for conducting the lab and should be taken into account when drawing a conclusion.
3. Procedure -- The procedure is the step by step instructions that you will follow during the lab. It should be written clearly enough so as not to leave any confusion as to what needs to be done. This will also be found either in the textbook or be given by the instructor.
4. Data -- This is the area where the measurements and observations made during the lab are recorded. Often it will consist of some type of chart in which to record data.
5. Calculations -- Not all labs will require calculations to be performed. Any calculation that is performed, however, should be recorded in this section no matter how simple the calculation may be. Errors can occur even in simple addition, so record the steps taken even if done on a calculator.
6. Conclusion -- The conlcusion is probably the most important portion of the lab write-up because it conveys the understanding you have reached based on the data collected. In it you should give any explanations for observations and measurements made as well as state any possible errors that may have occurred to vary the results.

The main purpose of a lab write-up is to explain through written form what took place in the experiment in such a way that anyone who might want to verify your results may do so by following your procedure. Remember there is not necessarily a right answer for a lab. Results in labs do cary, so don't worry if your results are not the same as others in your class.
