How Our Content Filtering Works

In light of some of the recent support requests we have received I thought it might be helpful to give some insight on how our general network is configured and how parents and staff can use our tools when students are at home or at school.

Our Network

This is our basic security structure when students are connected to the network in our buildings at USD-417.

Off-Network

When a student is not connected to the network in our buildings, they are no longer behind our firewall. This means that certain content filtering provided by our network no longer works. It also means that certain GoGuardian tools like direct monitoring by screen sharing no longer work, while other tools like content filtering in the students Chromebook still function although with a less restrictive policy.

Additional Tools

The GoGuardian Parent App allows parents further control over their students content access and is a wonderful tool for those who wish to have further insight into how their students use their Chromebook. All it requires is a member of the IT staff to add a profile with the parents preferred email address. Once that is completed, they simply install the app on their device of choice and login.
