A new year, A new Face.

This new year will start a few new things for us here at USD 417. The board just approved a new staff member for the IT department and I have decided to start writing this monthly update to help you keep up to date with what is going on. I also plan to slowly add in some things to this site that will hopefully make it a place to use as a resource for technology questions in the future. The goal is to keep you updated on what is going on in my IT life.

What have I been working on lately? This website of course, as well as getting something called OneSync setup and working. OneSync is a part of our ClassLink subscription and automates some aspects of computer and email account creation. It should make my job a bit easier and give me more time to do other things.

About the middle of December a huge vulnerability was discovered in Java that I had to research. Unfortunately much of the worlds tech still runs on Java code and this is a pretty major breach. We, as users, are at the hands of the software developers to write updates to fix the security hole. There is nothing we can do until the hole is fixed except pray that we are not compromised. If you want to read more about it, here is a story on Wired.com.

Other things that I have been working on include,

  • Getting computer orders setup for Staff and Student computers for the 22-23 school year

  • Working on E-Rate projects for the coming year. (firewalls and Access points)

  • Installing Frontline Interactive panels during any no school days

  • Sold some old equipment to bring back some money to the district

Everything else is business as normal. Putting out the fires as they come in and preparing for next school year.
